Teaching circuits to the next class of engineers
Since February 2024 I've been an undergraduate teaching assistant at Universidad de Ibagué for five courses, most of them in circuits and electronics.
- Since
- February 2024
- Courses
- DC Circuits, AC Circuits, Electronics I, RF Electronics, Statistics
- Tasks
- Workshops, lab support, grading, teaching material
How I got here
The best way to learn is by teaching. I proposed the idea to William Marin, the program’s Vice-Dean, who was teaching us Analog Electronics (Electronics I) at the time. He liked it and let me be his teaching assistant for several semesters. Professors of other courses did the same.
What teaching taught me
Unlike a typical teaching assistant, I focused on helping students analyze and truly understand the concepts behind difficult topics. That helped them see electronics as something that makes sense, instead of a degree where you follow formulas and memorize steps, as often happens in engineering.
It hasn’t been easy. Splitting my time between studying, working and teaching, adapting to each student’s needs, and finding ways to simplify complex topics has been challenging, but rewarding.
